Chippewa Ottawa Treaty Fishery

In 1981, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Sault Ste.
Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and Bay Mills Indian Community,
parties to the 1836 Treaty, formed the Chippewa Ottawa Treaty Fishery
Management Authority to regulate the treaty fishery. Little River Band
gained federal recognition in 1994 and joined COTFMA in 1998. Comprised
of the four tribes chairmen and conservation committee chairmen, and ex
officio Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
representatives, the Authority works to ensure conservation and
enhancement of the Great Lakes fishery resource for future generations.
